And product design… don’t even get me started. It’s easy to fall into traps, trying to make things look sleek and modern. I encountered this at a factory in Ningbo last time, they designed a housing with all these intricate curves, looked beautiful in the renders, but it was a manufacturing headache and structurally weak. Simple is often better, trust me. Always think about how it’s actually going to be built, not just how it looks on paper. We're dealing with a lot of zinc alloy these days, for the housings mostly. Feels solid, bit cold to the touch, has that metallic smell. It's alright, but you gotta be careful with the casting process, porosity can be a killer. Then there's the polycarbonate – lightweight, impact resistant, but scratches easily. Strangely, everyone’s obsessed with ABS, claiming it's more durable, but I've seen plenty of ABS parts crack under stress. The screws? Mostly stainless steel, gotta resist corrosion.

Honestly, things are moving fast. Everyone’s talking about lightweighting, modular design, and sustainability. It’s all well and good on paper, but I’ve been on sites where “lightweight” just means “feels cheap” and falls apart after a month. You think they’re looking for eco-friendly when they’re battling a deadline and a monsoon? Not always. What I’ve noticed is people get hung up on details, especially interfaces. Seems simple enough, right? But getting the tolerances right, ensuring a solid connection… it’s a nightmare. I encountered this at a factory in Ningbo last time – they’d designed a quick-release mechanism that looked fantastic in CAD, but jammed every other time you tried to use it. Strangely, it always seemed to happen when the boss was watching. We primarily use high-density polyethylene for the housings, occasionally polypropylene if the client's really pinching pennies. HDPE smells… well, like plastic, but a good plastic. It's got a bit of give, feels sturdy. PP is cheaper, smells a little sharper, and feels… well, flimsier. You gotta wear gloves when handling either, especially if it’s been sitting in the sun. And the fasteners, almost always stainless steel, 304 grade usually. You can tell the good stuff – it’s heavier, smoother, doesn’t feel like it’s going to shear off the second you apply torque.
